Can’t Anybody Tell Me Blues

This was the track I was planning on posting yesterday. Walter Vinson leads this duet with Harry Chatman on piano in this incredibly fun and fresh sounding. Chatman steals the show here, but Vinson pulls the whole song together. The second track “Overtime Blues” is a showcase for Vinson, just him and his wonderful guitar – but it raises some doubt on if the Leroy Carter of the first track is Vinson as rumored. I think the guitar on “Can’t Anyone Tell Me Blues” sounds a lot like Vinson and the vocals could just be off because of the recording equipment.

I wonder if Leroy Carter is one of the Chatmon brothers? Armenter Chatmon used the name “Bo Carter” and Harry Chatmon used the name “Harry Carter”, maybe Sam Chatmon was Leroy Carter. Walter Vinson played with them in “The Mississippi Sheiks”.

See ya! PS.I love “Overtime Blues”.

did sam record any solo sides? it would be interesting to compare those to the leroy carter sides we have. I guess it as equally as likely that Vinson used Carter much like the Chatmon brothers, because they were all in the Sheiks.

I just love Walter Vinson. Met his cousin Mose (piano player on Sun records) in Memphis about 10 years ago, he seemed a bit put out that I just wanted to ask about Walter!

His songs with the Sheiks of course include the classics “Stop And Listen” and “Sitting On Top Of The World”. “Overtime Blues” is about the best of the rest IMHO, though I also love “Rats Been On My Cheese”!

His guitar work with Charlie McCoy also excellent, the two of them on “Jackson Stomp” is remarkable.
