Diamond Buyer Blues

I remember that someone emailed me about a 60’s or 70’s blues artist that featured violin in their blues, but I forgot to respond to the email, and now I can’t remember the artist’s name. So if that was you, email me back! And I’ll respond this time.

Which brings us to Jack Kelly and the Memphis Jug Band, I’m not a huge fan of Jug Bands or String Bands , but I’m a sucker for violins in blues. Jack Kelly has a great sense of rhythm and this song features a great breakdown and some wonderful violin parts.

I think Will Batts is the fiddler on those cuts, and Dan Sane on the flat-picked backup guitar. Jack Kelly and His South Memphis Jug Band has such a deep, heavy sound. They tended to re-use a couple of musical themes: the “61 Highway” theme and the “Red Ripe Tomatoes” theme. Diamond Buyer more or less fits into the latter. As musicians, the band brings so much to the table that even when they’re ‘recycling’, there’s something interesting to listen to.

Great song and a great band!

Jack kelly has such a great voice and this song does not have the cluttered feel of other jug bands. Is there any publications that feature the various jug Bands ?
