I got a pretty hot tip of a store in Raleigh that is selling Document CDs for about 9 bux, so I’m heading up there right now. But first a great pre-war blues track from Chicago. Billie (Willie Mae) McKenzie was a blues singer from Chicago who was mostly known for her dirty blues tracks – but unlike Lil’ Johnson she was also able to make some really great non-dirty blues sides. This song “I’d Rather Drink Muddy Water” features Billie at her most vulnerable. It’s a perfect morning after song.

Cats and a Fiddle did a jaunty/carefree version that’s tip top too, but this is a versatile song–stands up in a number of different interpretations. This is a very nice find.

As a blues singer in NY, I was drawn to this site by the “carrot” of a free download of the tune “rather drink muddy water.” When I clicked on the download thing, I kept being redireacted to the “Honey, Where You Been So Long” page. No free down load, but interesting info. “Rather Drink” is such a strong tune that I can rely on it to boost mine or a set’s energy if I do it uptempo or in a mellow mood. I wonder iF Willie Mae ever wondered about how far reaching her work would travel? No disrespect, but I’ll wager that offstage, most of her thoughts were about the next gig or the bills. Hope I’m totally wrong, but ain’t that the blues.
