“Jelly Bean Drag” was recorded on 2nd October 1929 for the Champion record label in Richmond, Indiana (hometown of the band). The piece itself has some very interesting elements. Syd’s solo on the trumpet begins fragilely. Syd repeats his first note 3 times holding the note on the third repetition. He then warms up and draws upon the blues to provide a gutsy solo of good length. Syd’s solo is followed by a fascinating banjo solo by Paul George, where he plays the banjo very much like a guitar. After the solo the band plays together and states melody of the tune and finishes.
